Developed by Dr. Ken Heaton at the University of Bristol (1997). Used worldwide by gastroenterologists.
The 7 types
- Type 1-2: Constipation — too slow transit
- Type 3-4: Ideal — normal, healthy stool
- Type 5: Lacking fiber
- Type 6-7: Diarrhea — too fast transit
What's normal?
- Frequency: 3 times/week to 3 times/day is all normal
- Most people go once or twice per day
- Type 4 (smooth snake) is the gold standard
- Your gut transit time is 12-36 hours on average
