Do I study enough?

Compare your weekly study hours to other students.

hours/week

How many hours should you study per week?

The average US college student studies about 15 hours/week outside of class (NSSE 2023), down from 24 hours in 1961. The "rule of thumb" is 2–3 hours of study per credit hour per week — so a 15-credit semester means 30–45 hours/week of study. Few students come close.

Study hours by student type

  • Average US student: 15 hours/week
  • Engineering/STEM: 19 hours/week
  • Arts/Humanities: 14 hours/week
  • Business: 12 hours/week
  • Medical students: 30–40 hours/week

Does more study = better grades?

Research shows diminishing returns after 25–30 hours/week. Quality matters more than quantity — active recall and spaced repetition are 2–3x more effective than re-reading notes. Students who study in focused 25-min blocks (Pomodoro) retain more than marathon studiers.
