How many steps per day is normal?

The often-cited 10,000 steps goal was actually a 1960s Japanese marketing campaign for a pedometer. Modern research shows 7,000–8,000 steps/day provides most of the health benefit, with diminishing returns above 10,000.

Average daily steps by age (NHANES + Fitbit aggregate data)
