How long does sex normally last?

Penetrative intercourse only, not including foreplay

How long does sex actually last?

According to the landmark Waldinger stopwatch study (2005) where 500 couples timed intercourse with a literal stopwatch, the median duration is 5.4 minutes. A survey of sex therapists defined "desirable" as 7–13 minutes — much shorter than most people assume.

Clinical data on intercourse duration (Waldinger et al.)

  • Too short: 1–2 minutes (therapists' consensus)
  • Adequate: 3–7 minutes
  • Desirable: 7–13 minutes
  • Too long: 13+ minutes (associated with discomfort)

Why porn distorts expectations

  • Average porn scene lasts 20–40 minutes — 4-7x longer than real sex
  • Self-reported duration averages 12+ minutes — nearly double the actual stopwatch data
  • Most of a satisfying sexual encounter is foreplay, not intercourse
  • Duration does not correlate with female satisfaction — arousal and foreplay do
