The Bristol Stool Chart

Developed by Dr. Ken Heaton at the University of Bristol (1997). Used worldwide by gastroenterologists.

The 7 types

  • Type 1-2: Constipation — too slow transit
  • Type 3-4: Ideal — normal, healthy stool
  • Type 5: Lacking fiber
  • Type 6-7: Diarrhea — too fast transit

What's normal?

  • Frequency: 3 times/week to 3 times/day is all normal
  • Most people go once or twice per day
  • Type 4 (smooth snake) is the gold standard
  • Your gut transit time is 12-36 hours on average
